Ovarian health — an important step on the path to becoming a mother
Ovarian diseases can directly affect a woman's reproductive health and fertility. This is because it is in the ovaries that egg cells mature and hormones essential for pregnancy are produced for.
Ovarian diseases: the most common problems
Today, many women face problems related to the ovaries:
🔹 Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition characterized by hormonal imbalance, where ovulation may be irregular or not occur at all. This is precisely why it makes getting pregnant difficult.
🔹 Ovarian cysts
A cyst is a fluid-filled sac in the ovary. There are different types of cysts: some resolve on their own, while others require ultrasound monitoring or treatment. Whether a cyst affects pregnancy depends on its type and size, which is why each case is evaluated individually by a doctor.
🔹 Hormonal imbalances
Ovarian function is regulated by hormones (FSH, LH, prolactin, etc.) produced by the pituitary gland and other endocrine glands. If this balance is disrupted, the egg maturation and ovulation process are compromised.
🔹 Diminished ovarian reserve
The number of egg cells in the ovaries naturally decreases with age, and in some women, this process begins early. If the reserve decreases, the chances of getting pregnant may also drop, which is why it is important not to lose time in such cases.
How do ovarian problems affect pregnancy?
These conditions can affect the ovulation process and make it difficult to conceive.
What symptoms warrant checking ovarian function?
Sometimes the following conditions are related to ovarian function:
- menstrual cycle irregularities;
- weight changes;
- inability to conceive for a long time.
How is ovarian function checked?
The condition of the ovaries is usually assessed through a combination of several methods:
- hormonal tests — FSH, LH, estradiol, and AMH (performed on the days of the menstrual cycle specified by the doctor);
- ultrasound examination — shows the size of the ovaries, cysts, and the number of follicles;
- if necessary, additional examinations, such as determining the patency of the fallopian tubes.
AMH is considered one of the main indicators in assessing ovarian reserve, but it is not the only criterion: the result is interpreted by the doctor in conjunction with age, ultrasound, and other hormones.
👨⚕️ Why is it important to identify the problem in time?
The most important aspect is identifying the problem in time. By organizing modern examinations and proper treatment of the ovaries to achieve pregnancy, it is possible to preserve fertility and increase the chances of pregnancy for many women.
