🧬 Why are we hearing more about male infertility today?
Infertility is not just a problem related to women. Men's reproductive health also plays an important role in having children.
Why is there more talk about male infertility?
For many years, if there were no children, the woman was examined first. Today's medicine shows that the male factor is involved in approximately half of infertility cases. For this reason, the examination is now conducted for both husband and wife together, and male health is given special attention.
What factors affect sperm quality?
Smoking, excess weight, hormonal and genetic changes can affect sperm quality. Some of these (for example, smoking and weight) can be corrected by changing lifestyle, while hormonal and genetic factors require a doctor's examination.
🔬 What problems can be detected in a spermogram?
A spermogram is the primary analysis for evaluating male semen. The results are usually compared with WHO (World Health Organization) standards, and the following conditions can be detected:
Azoospermia
The absence of sperm in the semen. This condition is treated according to its cause; sometimes it is possible to obtain sperm using methods such as Mikro-TESE.
Teratozoospermia
A decrease in the proportion of normally shaped sperm. It is important to evaluate the result together with sperm morphology indicators.
Oligozoospermia
A sperm count that is lower than normal.
Asthenozoospermia
Decreased sperm motility. This condition often occurs in a spermogram along with other changes.
What are the spermogram standards?
According to WHO 2021 (6th edition), the lower reference limits are as follows:
- sperm concentration — at least 16 mln/ml;
- progressive motility — at least 30%;
- sperm with normal morphology — at least 4%;
- ejaculate volume — at least 1,4 ml.
Laboratories may use standards from different years, so the result should only be interpreted by a doctor.
These diagnoses are not a final verdict
The important thing is that these diagnoses do not mean that it is absolutely impossible to become a father. Each case requires an individual examination and approach.
