🩺 Pregnancy not occurring? What to do?
A child is a big dream for every family waiting for one. But sometimes, even after months or years pass, the expected result may not happen.
In such a situation, the most important thing is to identify the root cause of the problem without wasting time!
Why is pregnancy not occurring? Main reasons
Pregnancy may not occur due to the following factors:
- problems related to ovulation;
- fallopian tube obstruction;
- hormonal changes;
- a decrease in the number and quality of sperm in men.
The cause can be in both the woman and the man
The first three of these factors relate more to women's health, and the last one to men's health. Therefore, the cause can be in the woman, the man, or both parties, and it is advisable for the husband and wife to undergo the examination together.
🔬 When should you consult a fertility specialist?
It is recommended to undergo an examination if pregnancy does not occur despite regular, unprotected sexual intercourse for 12 months under the age of 35, and for 6 months starting from age 35. After age 40 or if certain problems exist, it is important to consult earlier.
How long can you wait depending on age?
- Under 35 — if pregnancy does not occur within 12 months;
- Starting from 35 — after 6 months;
- After 40 — as soon as possible, without waiting.
These timeframes are determined based on the woman's age: the number and quality of eggs decrease with age, which is why time becomes an important factor.
In what cases should you consult without waiting?
In the following cases, there is no need to wait 6–12 months; it is better to consult a fertility specialist immediately:
- the menstrual cycle is irregular or absent;
- there is a diagnosis of endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, or pelvic inflammatory disease;
- there is a problem with the fallopian tubes, an ectopic pregnancy, or surgery in that area;
- the man has low sperm parameters or has had an injury/surgery to the testicles;
- there is a history of oncological treatment.
What is checked during a fertility specialist appointment?
The fertility specialist first studies the medical history of the husband and wife, then may recommend the following examinations:
- hormonal tests (on specified days of the menstrual cycle for women);
- spermogram for men;
- ultrasound examination;
- if necessary, determining the patency of the fallopian tubes.
In most cases, the main examinations can be carried out within one menstrual cycle, so there is no need to delay the examination.
