Are female and male hormone tests the same?

Are female and male hormone tests the same? 🧬

Many people think that hormone tests are the same for everyone when planning for a child. In reality, because the female and male bodies function differently, hormone tests also differ. Hormone testing is not just a blood test, but an important diagnostic step that provides a complete picture of reproductive health.

👩 About female hormones: when and how are they tested?

In women, because hormones are dependent on the menstrual cycle, tests are performed on specific days. The level of female hormones changes during different stages of the cycle, so a test result taken on the wrong day can be confusing.

What are the main female hormones?

If FSH, LH, AMH, estradiol, progesterone, and other hormones are tested at the specifically designated time, the result will be more accurate:
  • FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) — regulates the development of follicles in the ovaries, usually tested on days 2–3 of the menstrual cycle;
  • LH (luteinizing hormone) — stimulates the ovulation process;
  • AMH (anti-Müllerian hormone) — is considered the most reliable indicator for assessing ovarian reserve, i.e., the number of eggs;
  • Estradiol — the main female hormone that increases as follicles mature;
  • Progesterone — increases after ovulation and ensures preparation for pregnancy, usually tested on days 21–22 of the cycle.

👨 Male hormones: what should be focused on?

In men, hormones are not dependent on the menstrual cycle, so the test can be performed on any day. Usually, hormones such as testosterone, FSH, LH, prolactin, and estradiol are evaluated. These tests are of great importance in determining male reproductive health.

Why are male hormones important?

Testosterone is the primary hormone that biologically shapes the male body, and it directly affects sperm production, sexual function, and overall energy levels. A decrease in male hormone levels can lead to a deterioration in spermogram parameters and infertility. Therefore, hormonal testing in men is usually recommended when spermogram results are not good or in cases of sexual dysfunction.

🔬 Why is hormone testing necessary?

Through hormone testing, a doctor can determine the functioning of the endocrine system, the work of the ovaries or testicles, as well as problems related to the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. Hormones and their importance in the body are immense — they regulate metabolism, growth, sexual development, and reproductive functions. Any hormonal imbalance, even if minor, can cause a delay in pregnancy or prevent it from occurring altogether.

When should you undergo hormonal testing?

Hormone testing is recommended in the following cases:
  • If the menstrual cycle is irregular or absent;
  • If pregnancy has not occurred for more than a year;
  • If spermogram parameters are low in men;
  • If problems related to sexual function or libido are observed.

🤍 Childlessness — a two-sided issue

Remember, childlessness is not a problem that depends only on the woman. In the process of examination and treatment, the most correct approach is to evaluate the man and the woman together. According to statistics, in about half of infertility cases, the cause lies with the male side, so it is necessary to test not only female hormones but also male hormones in parallel. 📞 Contact us for an appointment and for more detailed information. 📨 Source: Telegram: @eko_iksi_clinic
